Production: Poster

Using some photos I had taken of the cast, I have created a poster to help market our film. it will also be used to brand the blog.

Production: Feedback from the Rough Cut

I decided to get some feedback on what went well with our Rough Cut and what could be improved. This feedback is mainly from people from our core target audience (15-17) though does encompass views of a wider target audience (18+).

What Went Well:
  • The camera shots used worked well.
  • The idea for the film is good and fits in with other Disney Films.
  • Interweaving the shots of the two characters works well (cross cuts).
Even Better If:
  •  The beginning, before the characters enter could be slightly shorter.
  • There should be more of an introduction of the characters rather than just having them walking up and down stairs.
  • The music is too repetitive and needs to feel more like a Disney film, try some other ideas for sound?
  • It feels like, for an opening, it's too elongated and doesn't necessarily capture the audience's attention the way it should. This could be as a result of the repetitive music or maybe even the walking scenes lasting too long.

Production: Sound and Drafted Titles

Following feedback from our first Rough Cut, we realised we needed to change the sound around. As I developed the original sound track for the film, it was my job to fix it. (The sound is heavily influenced by, band, The 1975, but has been changed around a great deal. The reason we took this influence is because we found that a lot of their music suits our title sequence and had the kind of sound we were wanting to achieve.)

To begin with, I changed around the drum beats, made it change as the song went along. I also changed the instruments around and made better use of the software instruments available to me. I also changed the structure slightly and added a breakdown. All in all, I simply made it less repetitive and added more variation.

Here is what I ended up with (the video and audio have been compressed so will not be at optimum qulaity) (this video also includes the ident that had been drafted at the time) (I also decided to add a draft of the narrative titles):

This is a screenshot from 'Behind the Scenes', as it were:

Production: Making the Ident

Below are a couple of screenshots whilst I was making the ident for our film. I made it using After Effects CS6 with the use of two external plugins: Trapcode Particular (for the smoke) and Trapcode Lux (for the beam on the light).

Here is the finished product from that:

I then decided that the ident would also need sound. I used the exported video (above) and transferred it over to my Mac.

I then opened up Logic and Imported the video file.

I, first, wanted to add a sound for the smokey effect at the beginning of the ident. I used a white noise filter and played around with it (I made use of the stereo audio field and panned the smoke sound to make it sound as if it were coming from both left and right - as it does in the video).

I then used some of the loops from the Apple Loops Browser and looked under the 'Texture' category and found some sounds loops that worked well together (some of the 'Evolving Atmosphere' loops). I also played around with these sounds and added them in as the lights come on.

I then bounced (exported) the audio and moved it over to my Windows PC. I opened up the After Effects project and put imported the sound file and placed it where it needed to be.

Finally, I exported the video.

Here is the finished product (this version, video and audio, has been compressed but will be in full quality for the actual movie):

Production: Reflection of Filming

During the first set of filming sessions, we had a few framing issues, there was too much camera movement and the costume for the main female character wasn't up to scratch.

We decided to re-shoot everything to ensure everything was perfect.

Production: Rough Cut 1!

Here's our first rough cut!

We haven't as of yet added any credits (except for the title of the film) and we intend to have them over the moving images and they will be narrative.
We will also be creating our own idents for the beginning.

Feedback:

Some match cuts felt a bit jumpy.
Going to re edit them to ensure all match cuts are smooth.

We slightly broke the 180 degree rule.
Rather than waste time re-shooting, we will use another one of our shots that we filmed.

Some shots felt like they lasted too long.
We will consider re-editing them again to use different types of cuts.

The music felt a bit repetitive.
We may change the music slightly or, as it is an instrumental, add some vocals.

REVIEWING WHAT WE NEED TO IMPROVE

FEEDBACK

  • We need to make sure the characters are dressed for their act
  • We need to make sure we watch over what we record so it looks good
  • Get different camera angles
  • WORK TOGETHER AS A TEAM (MAIN TARGET)
  • Plan properly before you do

Film idea - STRANGE CONNECTION

STRANGE CONNECTION

Geeky boy
Popular girl

They are both from different social groups and when they end up colliding it becomes strange for everyone around them to see this type of relationship form.

These are the main stereotypes that are affiliated in the young teens area.
We are also trying to get the message across that you can mix with different people from different groups.

My group and I are trying to get different techniques and shot angles in this short film.
We have to make sure our Mise en scene is right and the way we portray both the characters.

Planning: Production Schedule

Planning: Storyboard and Feedback

We were told that using a contact sheet is ok but it would be better to use a proper storyboard with descriptions of each shot.

Planning: Costume Pack

We will be using these (or similar) costumes:

Popular Characters

Planning: Location Pack

We will be filming in City and Islington College:

Story board / feel of the film tite

The overall film title included a Geeky character as well as a popular character,

The idea of the story was to show how a 'geeky character acts in a school environment in comparison to how a 'popular person' acts.
The twist to the title is that whilst having two separate shots of both types of people and their personal missions for that day , they meet suddenly and it reveals a strange connection between the two characters, The popular girls friend then looks at her in disgust as how she was nice to a geek.

We named the film strange connection as its two considered opposites who strangle attract each other.

The whole film will reveal what happens when this connection carries on.

Pictures Whilst filming

Film Day

Today We started filming my shots first, it went really well and we had a free maths classroom to get the 'geeky' feel. We only had to go through the the shots a couple times.

Also we had to film  me walking down the whole length of the corridor so we had to do many takes to get a natural tracking shot feel. However we learnt that people are doing lessons and tend to wonder between classes so we we had to be ready to re do shots at all times.

For the long shot of me walking down the stairs I had to be on the second floor whilst it was filmed by dan outside of the college, it was cool as he had to text when action was.
For the final scene we had to film me and Monica meeting in the cafeteria, this scene was quick and easy to film.

If i could change one thing about this project it would be for me to film more scenes.
